SBS Chicken House
Often referred to as "Chateau Chiccy", The SBS coop was designed to hold 50 layers and built by the Fourth Grade students and their families. Two dozen additional young chickens have recently begun laying and we now generate over 6 dozen eggs a week. A new door has been opened at the back of the inner yard and our adult chickens are now able to freely range amongst the grape vines in our northern block of vines, enjoying the weeds, dirt, bugs and more out there.
In the autumn of 2015 the Fourth Grade class raised a new batch of 18 hens, and later that spring another class raised the last batch hens to bring our total population up to around 50.
Eggs are being used for class cooking projects, our Farm Lunches, and the remainder is being sold to the school community to help pay for the annual upkeep and care of the chickens and their wonderful house.
